Often when people start the keto diet, the hardest thing they find is not being able to have the same treats that they used to.
The best way to achieve your goals and stick to the keto diet is having all your favourites but in a new keto-friendly way.
With thousands of cups of coffee drank around the world every day, I'm sure coffee is one of life simple pleasures that many people can't live without and just because you are starting the keto diet doesn't mean you should have to.
The question is...
Is latte coffee keto-friendly?
Unfortunately, not. In its most common form, of cow's milk and a tsp of sugar, latte coffee is not keto-friendly.
This doesn't mean it can't be adapted to a keto-friendly lifestyle.
In this recipe I've found the easiest way to have a creamy, tasty coffee with none of the carbs.
The Nespresso Keto Pods
The secret to this simple, delicious, creamy keto coffee is rejuvenation water's Nespresso compatible keto coffee pods.
These pods have been specially designed for the keto diet as they contain MCT oil.
The MCT oil blended into each pod not only gives the coffee its great flavour but also provides fat to the diet.
There are also many benefits to including MCT oil in the diet, even if you don't follow the keto diet.
Instant Energy
Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are a type of dietary triglycerides made of fatty acids that are 6 to 10 carbon atoms in length (hence the name medium).
As MCTs have a shorter chain length they do not need bile to break them down to pass from the gut to the liver like LCTs do.
MCTs easily enter your cells without being broken down, they can be used as an immediate source of energy.
Fat Loss
Having a diet rich with MCT oil can increase fat-burning and weight loss compared to diets containing an equivalent amount of standard dietary fat.
Plus, the added fat increases the feeling of satiety, which can lead to decreased calorie intake and therefore overall weight-loss.
Brain Power
The ketones we produce when we ingest MCT oils increase mitochondria efficiency by increasing ATP yield (ATP is what our cells use for energy).
They also do not require insulin or glucose to cross the blood-brain barrier. This means they can provide a quick alternative source of energy to power our brain cells.
The Milk
In a standard latte many people choose cow's milk as the milk of choice. However, cow's milk contains a high number of sugars, making it an unsuitable choice for the keto diet.
Rejuvenation water's Nespresso compatible keto coffee pods can be enjoyed without milk, due to the MCT oil creating a creamy espresso.
If you are still craving a large, milky latte then I'm sure you're now asking...
What kind of milk can I put in my coffee on keto?
The best milk for the keto diet is coconut milk.
This is because it has the lowest net carbs per 100ml of all the milk alternatives.
But you can also have an almond milk latte, as this is a close second to lowest net carbs and doesn't have an overpowering flavour, like coconut milk does.
How to Make a Keto Coffee Latte
Now you have your Nespresso compatible keto coffee and the milk of your choice, it’s time to make your keto coffee latte.
Firstly, you need to heat your milk. The amount of milk you use is personal preference, but I recommend around 300ml.
If you are following the keto diet it is a good idea to use less milk as even coconut milk will contribute to your net carbs for the day.
Also make sure you measure how much you are using so you know the exact amount of carbs your coffee will contain.
Heating your milk in a milk frother is the quickest and easiest way, as all you have to do is pour it in and turn it on.
Whilst the milk is heating you can add your Nespresso keto capsule to your Nespresso machine.
There are a range of different Nespresso machines, all with different functions. It’s important to choose the right one for your needs and also when using rejuvenator waters Nespresso compatible pods, you need an original Nespresso machine.
For these pods you should use the espresso setting and if you are looking for a stronger coffee, I recommend using two pods.
Once your milk is heated you can add it to your coffee and your latte is complete.
Variations
To boost the fat of your keto coffee latte, you can add butter or cream and turn it into a bulletproof coffee.
For extra sweetness , sweetener such as monk fruit is suitable for the keto diet.
However, be careful when using sweeteners as they can increase your craving for sugar.
The keto diet doesn't have to stop you having your favourite treats when out and about either.
