Can you make decaf bulletproof coffee?

What is Bulletproof coffee?

If your new to the keto diet then you might have come across the term bulletproof coffee (or keto coffee) and wondered what it is.

Invented by David Asprey, bulletproof coffee quickly became a popular breakfast alternative or high fat beverage for anyone following the keto diet.

Bulletproof coffee is a type of coffee that is flavoured using high-fat products instead of high-carb substances. The most common ingredients in keto coffee are MCT oil, grass-fed butter, and ghee. Some people also enjoy adding coconut oil into their coffee too.

MCT oil is made of medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) derived from the fat of coconuts. This natural ingredient is what makes our keto coffee pods so special and one of the key ingredients of bulletproof coffees.

MCTs are a fast acting energy source as they are rapidly absorbed into the blood stream due to their smaller chain length.

Bulletproof coffee benefits those who are following the keto diet but also enjoy drinking sweetened coffee. It enables you to drink delicious hot cups of coffee without consuming to many carbs.

If you usually add lots of milk and sugar to your coffee, you won’t be able to do so when you’re following the keto diet. Both milk and sugar contain lots of carbs and this can push you over your 50 gram a day limit.

Bulletproof Coffee Benefits

Bulletproof coffee doesn't just taste great, there are lots of bulletproof coffee benefits.

Energy

The higher fat content slows down digestion meaning the caffeine is absorbed into the blood stream at a slower rate, providing longer lasting energy. Along with this, the shorter chain length of MCTs are metabolised and used in the body quicker than other fats.

This means the MCT oil is instantly used as a source of energy and converted to ketones. This is very beneficial for the keto diet because it provides you with a quick easy breakfast that won't spike your blood sugar levels but gives you the energy you need to start the day.

Weight loss

Research has shown that MCT oil can help induce and maintain the body in a state of ketosis (where your body burns fats stores for energy and not glucose).

This then leads to weight loss, usually at a very fast rate, which is often the main goal for people following the keto diet. It can also help with the prevention of keto-flu as it elevates the symptoms during the initial transition to burning fat.

Brain Power

Another one of the bulletproof coffee benefits is enhanced mental clarity. Many people say that a cup of bulletproof coffee can boost their energy and enhance their physical and mental performance for several hours.

Satiety

When following the keto diet you can only have 20-30g net carbs a day.

This can restrict meal sizes as most carb foods provide bulk to a meal making you feel full.

However, bulletproof coffee can make you feel fuller for longer due to the appetite suppressing effects of the caffeine and the feeling of satiety that fat provides.

For anyone following the keto diet this is beneficial as it will help reduce cravings, keep you satisfied until your next meal and stop you from breaking your diet.

Is caffeine free coffee keto?

A key part of the keto diet is staying in ketosis, and eating/drinking food and drinks that can kick them out of ketosis can be a big worry for people following the diet.

So it is no wonder that the question 'is caffeine free coffee keto?' is asked a lot.

The short answer is yes, caffeine free coffee is keto. In fact, caffeine or no caffeine, drinking coffee won't kick your body out of ketosis.

This is why coffee and bulletproof coffee are a very common breakfast for people on the keto diet to keep them in ketosis and even prolong intermittent fasting.
