What is Bulletproof Coffee?

If you follow the ketogenic (keto) diet, then I'm sure you are already drinking and know the benefits of bulletproof coffees. However, if you are not yet and want to know why you should be or you have never heard of bulletproof coffees then this article is for you. 

 

Bulletproof coffee (aka Butter coffee) is a drink that combines coffee, MCT oil and butter/ghee (or a similar, plant-based, high fat product if you're vegan).

 

Bulletproof coffee was invented by Dave Asprey. It’s a keto-friendly version of milky coffee that is enjoyed by people around the world.

 

Not only is keto coffee suitable for those following the keto diet, but it’s also ideal if you’re intermittent fasting, eating one meal a day (OMAD), or you’re trying to lose weight.

 

This is because it contains no carbohydrates, so it doesn’t ‘wake up’ your metabolism. Instead, your body remains in a fasted state (also known as ketosis).

 

Many people enjoy bulletproof coffee for breakfast so they can fast for as long as possible.

 

However, bulletproof coffees have got a bad reputation for their long preparation time and blending of specialised ingredients (MCT oil). As medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) have a shorter chain length they do not need bile to break them down to pass from the gut to the liver like long chain triglycerides do.

Instead of eating your usual breakfast and breaking your overnight fast, you can drink a bulletproof coffee and continue your fast for several more hours. You will get a nice energy boost from the fat sources, but you will still be a state of ketosis.

 

Ketosis occurs when your body is using ketones for energy, instead of glucose. You can achieve a state of ketosis when you are on a very low carbohydrate diet or when you are fasting for long periods of time.

 

It’s thought that being in a state of ketosis is beneficial for the body when it comes to weight loss. When your body has very few carbohydrates to use for energy, it will switch to using ketones for energy. Ketones are derived from your stored fat cells. So, keto coffee effectively causes your body to burn through fats. This can help you to lose weight more easily.

Ketogenesis is the process in the body where ketone bodies are produced for fuel, and is the preferred fuel by most tissues in the body and brain cells.

 

MCTs then converted into ketones in the liver and therefore help your body to get into a state of ketosis quicker.

MCT oil also promotes weight loss as it decreases calorie intake in the diet due to an increased feeling in satiety which leads to a longer time between meals. This increased feeling of fullness is caused by the stimulation of satiety hormones, leptin and cholecystokinin, being secreted into the bloodstream.

 

MCT oil has roughly 10% fewer calories than LCTs, which are found in foods such as olive oil, nuts and avocados. 

 

Finally, gut environment is very important for weight loss and MCT oil may help optimise the growth of good bacteria and support the gut lining. 

 

Brain Power

Although there is limited research into this, many people claim that they are much more focused when they consume MCT oil. A lot of people agree that the mental clarity improves, and they are able to concentrate on more difficult, demanding tasks after consuming bulletproof coffee.

 

The ketones we produce when we ingest MCT oils increase mitochondria efficiency by increasing ATP yield (ATP is what our cells use for energy).They also do not require insulin or glucose to cross the blood-brain barrier. This means they can provide a quick alternative source of energy to power our brain cells.

A study found that that when 10 people with diabetes were injected with insulin, they needed 30% less sugar to maintain normal blood sugar levels when they consumed MCTs, compared to LCTs.
